#shelives: She will also sleep!

"I will sleep when I am dead".

I have heard this saying so many times from my over-achieving wonder-woman female friends. And while I have not ever actually said this before myself, I have lived it.  But I wouldn't ever admit that I was living this way, because I always felt like it was I was accepting some type of crazy ultimatum. It suggested that I had to choose success and achievement over...sleep. It suggested that I could not actually have both; that the only time I would ever be allowed to rest would be in the grave. It suggested that I might not ever get to enjoy the fruit of mylabors. After all, I would not really slow down or pause long enough to rest...until I was dead.

Uhhh...NO! Not acceptable.

I am in pursuit of the life well-lived. I want to enjoy my life, do work that I love, and actually smell the roses along the way. And...heck yeah...I want to sleep too!

Here is the problem with this whole not sleeping thing...it actually freaks our body out. We were made in a way that requires rest. It is not optional.

Don't believe me?

Check this out. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that insufficient sleep has been linked to the development and management of a number of chronic diseases and conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Translation...lack of sleep could cause health conditions that...may get in the way of my pursuit of the well-lived life. Not saying that it would be the end of the world, but it does introduce an added set of life factors that have to be considered and managed.

I don't want to dig too deep on this. My point here is that our bodies actually need rest. They don't work as well as they could or even should when we don't get sleep.

I am personally taking a look at this for myself and committing to doing better. I would like to have it all (e.g., success, etc.), but if that means sacrificing my health...then I probably need to redefine what I mean by "all".

Just something to think about folks.

Much love,
